Once a Clevelander always a Clevelander! I was born and raised on the Southeast Side of Cleveland, first in the Union-Miles neighborhood and then Slavic Village. After graduating from Cleveland State and spending a few years in local law enforcement, I had a lengthy corporate career which involved moving across the United States including stops in Florida, Texas and California. During my career, I was involved in both participating and leading organizations in investigations. I returned back to the “LAND” a few years ago and it finally hit me! I’ve been a life long student of Cleveland history and fascinated with the cultures and characters in the city.

The book is an engaging, localized deep-dive into the lives of Polish immigrants who powered Cleveland’s industrial rise in the early 20th century.

Key aspects of the book and its subject matter include:

  • The Setting: Kaschalk explores where Polish Clevelanders lived and worked, including the factory floors, stone quarries of Berea, and the blast furnaces of Newburgh.
  • The Culture: It highlights the industrial corridors, the looms of the Cleveland Worsted Mills, and the community dynamics that shaped the city’s rise.
  • The Author: Tom Kaschalk is a native Clevelander, former police officer, and founder of My Cleveland History. He is also the author of Cleveland’s Neighborhood Taverns and Cleveland’s Ohio City Neighborhood.
